Select the right parent visa type

They very first step is to choose the right parent visa as per family’s conditions. The first step is to decide which type of parent visa is best for your family’s conditions. There are three types of parent sponsor visas available-

Parent Visa Subclass 600 (Parent visitor visa): Through this visa, your parents can stay in Australia for the period of 12 month. The recipient of this visa cannot apply for the permanent residency.

Parent Visa Subclass 143 (Contributory Parent Visa) : This is called parent visa in Australia. Through this visa your parents can stay In Australia and settle permanently.

Parent Visa (Subclass 103): This type of visa is also permanent, but the time taken to process it is much higher than that for a contributory parent visa. It is cheaper, however, the waiting period can be quite a few years.

Now you have selected the right type of Parent visa as per your family condition, go for step the next step.

Check the eligibility requirements

For any person that intends to become a sponsor to his or her parents, illness and disability factors apply so that they do not depend on Australian resources. Parents must meet a number of criteria, including:

Sponsor Requirements: A person seeking to sponsor any parent should be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen. Also, such parents need to be financially supported in Australia.

Age and Health: Age qualification of the parents, mostly above 65, as well as health checks are required, so they do not overburden the country’s health care system.

Balance of Family Test: At least, one-half of all children of the parent’s family authorised to stay in Australia must not have any other country, other than Australia, with significant proportions of their children. This test makes sure that the majority of reasons for applying for the visa are solely based on the idea of family.

Prepare the necessary and relevant documents

The sponsor (you) as well as the applicants (your parents) will have to gather a number of documents to be enclosed in the visa application packet. These involve:

  • Proof of Australian citizenship or permanent residency which are passport and birth certificate or in the case of residency documents.
  • Proof of relationship such as birth certificates, family registration documents.
  • Health evaluations and police clearance to the parents.
  • Proofs of financial support such as bank statements, provide proof of income.
  • You may also be required to demonstrate that your parents satisfy the health and character requirements for the visa in question.

Apply  for the Visa

With all the documents in hand you can proceed to making an application for the Australian visa as long as it has all the necessary documentation. This can be done online through the Australian Department of Home Affairs. If applying for a Contributory Parent Visa subclass 143, expect to pay a huge application processing fee. For the Parent Visa subclass 103, pay a lesser application fee but wait much, much longer than the former.

Wait for Processing and Decision

Submitting an application avails the next activity which is waiting for the visa to be processed. The time for visa processing may take different lengths basing on the type applied for:

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600): Approximately processed between 4 to 6 weeks.

Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143): It takes approximately 1 to 2 years.

This type of visa is subclassed 103 in the Parent category Australian immigration, which usually takes around 30 years since there is a limited allocation every year.

During the time, you may also have the requirement to submit some extra documentation and attend for further interviews if required.

Approval – Visa grant

When their parents receive a visa, they are aware that it has been approved, and shortly thereafter, their visa grant notice is sent to them, which will enable them to travel to Australia. They can move to Australia permanently and subsequently apply for a parent visa.
